BOOK REVIEW : HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE

Title: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
    Author: J.K.ROWLING
    Year: 2000
    Publisher: Bloomsbury
    ISBN: 0 7475 5009 9
    Price: $14.94.

To all Harry Potter fans, this is a book that you must not miss. It is filled with new magical spells and adventures. In this book, Harry Potter will be starting his fourth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. There will be new spells to be learned more exploring to be done in Hogwarts. However, Harry needs to be careful, as there might be danger. The return of Lord Voldemort will cause harm to Harry as well.

The story is about Harry Potter in his fourth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The school has been selected to hold the recently returned game called “ The Triwizard Tournament.” There are two schools, Beauxbatons and Durmstrang, which are also invited to participate in the tournament. The minimum age for the students to join the tournament is 17 years old and above. Once the Goblet of Fire has chosen the students, they will become the Champion for their respective schools. There is no turning back for the students that have been chosen. However, on the day of announcing the participants, Harry’s name flew out of the Goblet of Fire. He did not know that why his flew out. Therefore, Harry has no choice but to take part in the tournament. Harry will also know that Lord Voldemort has returned, when he touched on the Triwizard Cup on his last task.

The main characters of the story are Daniel Radcliffe who stars as Harry Potter, Rupert Grint stars as Ron Weasley, Emma Watson stars as Hermione Granger, Ralph Fiennes stars as Lord Voldemort, Michael Gambon stars as Albus Dumbledore, Brendan Gleeson stars as Alastor Moody, Robert Pattinson stars as Cedric Diggory, Stanislav Lanevski stars as Viktor Krum, Clemence Poesy stars as Fleur Delacour, Matthew Lewis stars as Neville Longbottom and Katie Leung stars as Cho Chang.

I think the characters are brave especially Harry Potter, Cedric Diggory, Viktor Krum and Fleur Delacour because they took up the challenge to compete against each other, which consist of four extremely dangerous tasks which they might die in the process of the game. I also think that the characters have a very strong true friendship because in the story, when Harry has difficulties with his second task, his friends helped him by going to the library to search for information.
My favourite character is Harry Potter. He is my favourite character because he is brave as he fought with Lord Voldmort in his last task. He is not selfish because in his second task, he can only save a friend from the danger in the sea, however, he managed to save Ron and Gabrielle. He is also a very fast thinker because in his first task, he needs to fight with a dragon and get a golden egg in order to win the game. When his task starts, Harry immediately saw the golden egg and he wants to snatch it. However, the dragon saw his action and wants to attack him. Luckily, Harry saw and he said a charm and his broomstick flew towards him. Harry sat on the broomstick and flew off and the dragon followed him as well. After a furious fight with the dragon in mid-air, Harry managed to snatch the golden egg and this means that his first task has ended. I can relate to Neville Longbottom because he is a helpful person as he always tries to help his friends who are in need. For instance, I would help my friends when they have difficulty in their schoolwork and teach them until they have fully understood. I feel that the characters would share their joy and hardship together, which I find precious as one might not even find a real true friend in his or her life.

In my opinion, I like the book because it is filled with new adventures, new characters and even more magical things like spell casts, incredible monsters and many others.I think that one would find the book interesting and would not want to stop reading as one might want to find out the next part of the story.

My favourite part of the book is when after Harry has swallowed a plant called Gillyweed, he turns into a creature that has gills and webbed-feet that would allow him to breathe and swim in the water easily.

My least favourite part of the book is when Harry managed to save Ron and Gabrielle, and suddenly, lots of sea mermaid swim towards him. Harry uses all his might to push them towards the surface of the sea. Later, the mermaids surrounded him. They somehow wanted to kill him by pushing him towards the deeper end of the sea. I find this very cruel and disgusting.

If I could change some part of the book, it would be not to have Cedric Diggory to die in the last task because he is a good friend of Harry and he helped Harry a lot in the Triwizard Tournament. I would want him to survive, as he is a loyal and true friend towards his friends, especially towards Harry.

I would recommend this book to those who like Harry Potter books very much and to those who like magical things and adventures.

BOOK REVIEW : THE WHITE DARKNESS

Title of the book :The White Darkness
    Author: Geraldine Mc Caughrean
    Publisher: OXFORD UNVERSITY PRESS
    Publification Date: 2005ISBN
    number: 9780192726186
    No of pages: 262
    Price of the book: $13.15
Opening sentence: Read this book and you would never want to put it down
The story is about a girl pining for her lover, Captain Oates. Although he had died, Sym was still devoted to him and had placed him in her heart. It also talks about Sym and Captain Oates memories.
The main characters were Sym and Captain Oates. I think the characters were very good. They were matching with the flow of the story. My favourite character was Uncle Victor. He was also named the “fountain of knowledge”. Uncle Victor knows everything under the sky. Ever since Sym’s father died in a car accident, he has been taking care of her. Uncle Victor can be related to Captain Oates. Captain Oates known as Titus Oates also gave advice to Sym to help her solve her problems.
There is another character called Sigurd. In Sym’s head, she thinks that Sigurd likes her. But actually Sigurd is just helping Sym as a precious friend. The story is also about Sym father’s symptoms and Sym’s dad did not even like her. Sym did not care. She continued respecting her dad.
I like the book. My favourite part of the book is on pg 57 chapter Seven “Talk”. My least favourite part of the book was chapter Six “The Ice”. If I could change the story, I would like Sym to find another guy after Captain Oates died. I would like to recommend this book to somebody. The person who likes to read a lot of books would like the book. The person could add it to his collection.

BOOK REVIEW : THE LEGEND OF LADY LONG NECK

Title: Mr Midnight The Legend of Lady Long Neck
    Author: James Lee
Year of when the book was published: 2007
Publisher: Angsana Books (an imprint of FLAME OF THE FOREST PUBLISHING Pte Ltd)ISBN: 978-981-4193-20-7
    Price of the book: $6.31
    Country it is published: Singapore

To anyone who loves to read ghost and mystery stuff, let us start to get chilled to the bone…
The story is about a ghost LADY LONG NECK named Victoria who had died a hundred years ago. She has a neck that is SIX TIMES LONGER than any other neck and it somehow seemed stretched. The ghost knew Ferlyn and therefore wanted them to help her. They tried to escape at first but were trapped. They therefore listened to what the ghost had to say. The ghost was killed by her husband on her birthday when she was young. She wanted them to avenge for her death and find her final peace. Her husband, who was a member of the Undead in the Afterlife, has turned into an evil spirit. He tried to stop and destroy Lady Long Neck. Therefore she needed their help to complete her task to warn those who are going to Die by the Neck-anyone who is going to be killed accidentally or strangled to death, so that she can obtain her final peace. Her evil husband came to stop the children from helping Lady Long Neck by threatening them that he will kill them the same way he killed Lady Long Neck. However, he failed to do so and was seized and carried by the Avengers of the Undead into a blazing furnace, where the avenging creatures prodded him into the flames. Lady Long Neck has been granted final peace. She thanked the children and went to reunite with her family. The main characters were Ferlyn and her friends, Victoria, also known as Lady Long Neck and Victoria’s evil husband. I think that Ferlyn and her friends were brave and bold enough to help Lady Long Neck despite their lives being threatened by Victoria’s evil husband. I think that Victoria was very pitiful because she wanted to have final peace but was stopped by her evil husband who hanged her when she was alive. She wanted to achieve final peace by trying to warn those who will be hanged or strangled to death but the people were too frightened to listen to her. So, she has to obtain her final peace by the help of Ferlyn and her friends. Her husband was very cold-blooded and cruel and even merciless because even after death, he still would not want to let Victoria have final peace. My favourite character is Ferlyn because she is smart, kind and helpful although she is timid. I do feel like I’m Ferlyn not because I’m trying to say that I’m smart, but because I am kind, helpful and rather timid.

I like this book simply because I love ghost stories and mystery. In addition, the book is a very good book because the stories are not only creepy but interesting. My favourite part in the book is the part where Ferlyn tries to warn a person from being strangled or hanged to death. She knew that the person was going to die either by hanging or by strangling and was trying to warn him and even save him so that Victoria could have her final peace. My least favourite part of the book is where the evil husband of Victoria tries to threaten the kids that he will kill them if they helped Victoria. If I could change any part of the book, I would like to change the part where her husband was evil but is not a member of a powerful evil force (the Undead) so that he cannot do anything to Victoria. I would also like to change the part where he was being carried to a blazing furnace, where the avenging creatures prodded him into the flames. I want to change it to even harsher punishment because he deserved a much harsher one. For instance, his spirit was never reincarnated after being carried into the furnace and was prodded by the avenging creatures.

I strongly recommend those who like to read ghost stories or mystery stories to read this book because you will really get chilled to your bone by the stories that they have. Those who are mystery lovers and ghost stories lovers or a combination of these two, you will definitely like this book.

    new books reviews

Here are some new books in the library:

    1) HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE

Voldemort and his followers, the Death Eaters, are out in the open now, so much that Rufus Scrimgeour, the new Minister of Magic, feels it is necessary to inform the muggle Prime Minister. Draco has been given an assignment by the Dark Lord, and a net of security has dropped on Hogwarts. Death's disappearances, and destruction increase as Harry's penultimate year at Hogwarts begins. In between classes Harry learns about Voldemort's past and keeps an eye on Draco and Snape, though no one else believes they have joined the Death Eaters. Harry also falls in love with someone he believes he should not. Even Ron is involved with the opposite sex, much to Hermione's annoyance.

2)CHICKEN SOUP FOR THE SINGAPORE SOULS

    Editorial Reviews

Review : "It is good to be reminded that we are not alone, that there are many others who also have their ups and downs. This collection of stories is a sharing of our hopes and joys as well as the pain and sufferring we experience as part of the Singapore family. It certainly makes our life's journey a little easier."

Review:"The stories here are as authentic and as tasty as my grandma's chicken soup - and the local flavour clears your head and warms your heart. How nice to know, too, that the 'Singapore Soul' is not an oxymoron."

Review:"Chicken Soup for the Singapore Soul is one book you will read again and again and pass down to your children and your children's children. It tells the stories of goodness, of the joys and struggles of Singaporeans that are truly inspiring. "

    3)LOVE,SUBURBAN STYLE
    From Booklist :

When Tony Award–winning actress Meg Addams loses another role to a younger actress and her teenage daughter is expelled from school, Meg decides to return to her childhood hometown in suburban Westchester County. But the town is no longer homey, and most of the old residents have left. The diner is now a sushi bar, and the quaint homes have been supersized, leaving very little hope of Meg affording a home until a fixer-upper thought to be haunted becomes available. A major asset is the next-door neighbor, Sam Rooney, one of the few townies left and Meg's unrequited crush from high school. The good news is that Sam is now single with two children of his own; the bad news is that he is not interested in a new relationship.
A vastly entertaining romance and a real standout laced with otherworldly intervention and a dash of social suburban commentary. - - - Engelmann, Patty
